Nala
nervous and had no clue how to handle the stress of a loud shelter. She wouldn't walk on a leash and would just shut down. The shelter reached out to GSGSR, knowing we had people that could provide what she needed to thrive. She entered her foster home scared and had no clue how to be a pet, and be inside a home with humans that loved her. Her foster home allowed her to decompress and then helped her to come out of her shell. Although she is still a "work in progress", this girl was adopted by her foster family who fell in love with her. Cheers, sweet girl!
Thank you to all of our applicants and those interested in these beautiful GSDs! However, dont be discouraged if you had applied. We have plenty of shepherds looking to find their "forever". New faces to be listed soon!!

Buddy
Good news!! BUDDY HAS FOUND HIS FOREVER HOME!
GSGSR put out a plea for an emergency foster home for Buddy, a 2 year old GSD boy. In order to keep him in a home - type living environment and to avoid any additional stress on this happy boy, a foster home needed to be secured ASAP. Well, the "likes" and shares flew in and the support you, as the GSGSR community, gave to us was incredible. We could tell Buddy was going to find his foster and his forever.
Buddy went into a foster home with an amazing couple with a female shepherd that could be Buddy's stunt double. They worked with Buddy, introducing him to dogs, the sights /sounds of the world, and have given him lots of training. Buddy fell in love with his foster sister... It was mutual.... like 2 peas in a pod. He was so loved by his foster family, he knew he was already "home". Buddy, now Apollo, has found his forever... With his gorgeous look-alike sister Athena. Congrats on your forever, Apollo (FKA Buddy)!!!

Sophie
Sophie was also the product of a loving family but they knew she was not a "city dog" (which is where they were relocating to) .... And they made the hard choice to find a home for Sophie where she could thrive and be less stressed. It took a special applicant to help Sophie work on her skittish ways. She took hours to even sniff her new forever "dad". However, once she realized he was a wonderful guy, she was smitten. Her new family understands the everyday stressors Sophie will face and plans to provide the best future for her. She will have two Shepherd brothers that will also help her come out of her shell.

Oscar
Before he was surrendered to GSGSR; Oscar spent his whole life in a windowless urine soaked; small area, of a Garage his only company was a mastiff. The mastiff was rescued as well.
Look at this handsome boy now! Oscar had a skin infection that covered his entire body; his eyes were swollen shut. He desperately needed medical care; GSGSR rescued him and with a donation from a friend; provided all for all his needs and healed him.
GSGSR had very little response when Oscar was posted due to his medical conditions. But one family saw beyond his looks; they were willing to give him a loving home even with no guarantee that his fur would ever grow back.
Oscar is 118lbs of pure love. He adores children; you can see his body soften when his kids are loving him. Oscar’s face and body both relax with such caring attention. Oscar spent his early life in small portion of a garage, he now moved up to the life all dogs deserved, a loving home. His new family is dedicated to teaching how to live the good life.
Oscar now has a family with children and a little dog sister named Abby; an adorable little French Bull Dog. Oscar even has his own yard to play in.
Truly rags to riches. Oscar is now blessed with a home and a family that love him. Please help us wish Oscar luck with his new family; he is a true ambassador to the breed. -
Angie
Fiona, now Angie, entered the GSGSR program in Jan 2021. Angie was completely shut down, almost catatonic, when rescued from an overcrowded shelter. She was so terrified that she could not walk so a volunteer carried her to the car. For the entire ride she laid in the back seat and could hardly lift her head.
Angie was on her way to a very special foster home; her foster dad previously adopted Max. Max was an unruly boy and needed alot of patience and training. Because Max’s new dad was gentle, kind and patient; Max became a dog that is now the mayor of his neighborhood. GSGSR knew that Max’s dad could provide Angie with the gift of love and patience needed to revive her spirit.
GSGSR volunteers arrived, with Angie, at what would become her new forever home. Poor terrified and broken-down Angie would not get out of the car and dug her nails deep into the seat. When volunteers touched her, she flinched. Max slowly made his way around the car and put his paws into the back seat; he peered in and looked at her. Max then gave his usual mayor like greeting to the GSGSR volunteers. Max just loves attention. Angie lifted her head to look out the back window to find Max. She crawled to the edge of the seat in an effort to see Max and slowly crawled out of the car to meet Max.
Volunteers supposed it would take weeks for Angie to come out of her withdrawal from the world. Something traumatized this girl; she was so terrified she wanted world to go away. Almost a year after the drive to her new home Angie now trusts her adoptive family. Due to Angie’s dad’s love and patience and Max’s help; they go on regular visits to the hardware store and to training sessions. Angie has learned to make eye contact with her dad and follows him around the house (true German Shepherd). When GSGSR asked why her new dad took Angie into his home he responded "you never give up on the dog".
Thank you to Angie’s new dad for believing in the healing power of love and kindness. -
Lola
10 years ago a very bad backyard breeder was shut down by the NJ State Police. Lola was one of 8 puppies rescued by GSGSR. GSGSR members immediately picked up the pups, brought them to a local Veterinarian and bathed them. The pups were in a dark, damp, cold basement without their mamma; they weren’t even 5 weeks old yet. The puppies were covered in urine, feces, and fleas. They had every parasite the Vet tested them for. GSGSR members took them into their homes immediately. The pups went out in pairs to foster homes that had other dogs and many homes had cats too.
The pups were healed, trained and socialized by foster volunteers until they were ready for their forever homes. Several of the pups were adopted by their foster families and all live the great life with other furry brothers and sisters as well as their human family members.
These pups taught us many things about dogs that were mistreated at a very young age. Every dog is different and has their special needs and unique personality. Lola was raised and trained in total kindness; she never wore a choke collar and all her training was positive.
Lola greets visitors with a toy in her mouth and is a fun-loving happy dog. She enjoys life hiking in the mountains and beautiful sunsets and rainbows. -
Prince
Prince is a 17 month old male German Shepherd with a lot of pep! His owner is moving back to his county and cannot take him with him.
Prince is confident, sweet and driven. He is very agile, loves to run and plays fetch. His owner takes him running 3 miles off leash daily. He needs an active family or a K9 handler since has potential to be a service dog. He is eager to please and work and is always waiting for his next task/command. His nose is always to the ground. He does need to be socialized with other pets. Interested in this sweet ball of energy? -
Foxy
Foxy was purchased by two 80 year old men from a local pet shop as a puppy 4 years ago. Recently, one of the gentlemen was taken to the hospital and is not expected to live. The other gentleman was ill but would not go to the hospital because he didn't want to leave Foxy. He was advised to euthanized her.
A past adopter called and wanted a mellow dog and we told her to come meet Foxy who is only 4 but is truly an old soul. Foxy went from being an only dog to joining in doggy daycare to living on a farm with horses. This really took a team and people with expertise and one women with so much love in her to adopt her. Congratulations Foxy you have finally found a loving mom and horses.
